Wow. This was an incredible year for music. There were releases from various artist ranging from Young Thug to Bjork. It took me two weeks to figure out how to condense my top five favorite albums this year and it was very difficult to do too. I have to let you know that this is my honest opinion and it may be different from a lot of other listeners. If you disagree or want to share your top five feel free to discuss it in the comment section below. I’d like to know everyone’s opinion on this. In any case let’s get started.
5 Alabama Shake – Sound & Color
A hugely satisfying album that transforms the band on a higher scale. This albums is a swampy, garage rock, soul-infused album that grabs you on the first listen. The performance, singing and songs are excellent. Not an album I was expecting from the band but it was still an extremely welcome one nonetheless. Truly fantastic.
4 Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp A Butterfly
What is there to say that hasn’t been said about this album. A definite highlight of the year and Kendrick really outdid himself on this one too. This album feels like another chapter in Kendrick’s life as it navigates through his struggle of trying to be a star as well as struggling to be a normal human being. But what really makes this album powerful is the social issues Kendrick brings up. It’s just a great record that deserves to be listen.
3 Chelsea Wolfe – Abyss
There is only one word that stuck with me when I listened to this album the first few times. Hauntingly. This is Hauntingly beautiful, Hauntingly intense, Hauntingly heavy. This album feels literally like an abyss. it’ss Chelsea Wolfe’s darkest project yet and it’s absolutely amazing. You can tell the blend of influences in this album as well. very dark music you can think of from Joy Division to Black Sabbath is shown in this and it comes out incredible. No matter how intense the instrumentation gets or how bleak Chelsea’s lyrics become, Abyss proves to unleash her musical talents and the results are stunning. A must listen.
2 Grimes – Art Angel
This album was essentially crack to me. It is possibly one of the catchiest pop albums I’ve heard in years. I listen to this album constantly Nearly from beginning to end with each listen. The album is a fusion of bubbly pop, crazed guitar samples and thunderous bass drums. On top of all of this Grimes brings forth incredible lyrics and vocals to this album. Like a great comic book this album breezes by the time you finish it while your brain urges you to re-listen to the LP.
1 Father john misty – I Love You, Honeybear
I’ve been listening to his album almost every other day since its release and is personally one of my favorite albums in the past five years. I can’t really explain it but this album hit very close to home to me. This album delivers a wide array of emotions and range. He gives his subject matters such as love, marriage and depression a unforgiving yet ultimately warm treatment. The melodies are whimsical while the songwriting itself is practically perfect given the subject matter. The song “When You’re Smiling and Astride Me,” comes to mind when I think of this album. One quote really sticks out showing Tillman’s eccentric ways, “You see me as I am, It’s true/ Aimless, fake drifter and the horny man – child momma’s boy to boot,” Then he sings passionately to his wife, “That’s how you live free/Truly see and be seen”. Tillman’s intentions and feelings as a songwriter speaks from the heart and it somehow gets better with every listen. Tillman truly went above and beyond with this record and is absolutely beautiful from beginning to end. A true classic.
